Got this message in my box yesterday and it sucks. Someone stole dude's moped. I don't have any photos of it, so all I can do for now is hope they can hunt it down. Good luck Holt!

Off topic?: VH1's The Pickup Artist concludes... scooterist doesn't win this time

(Portland scooterist and pickup artist who bowed out too soon... Spoon)
Don't know if you were keeping up with this entertaining and educational show. I won't say the winner's name to prevent spoilage, but I will mention another one of the competitors, Stephen Poon AKA Spoon (title link). Sure, he may have been the first to leave, but he's still #1 in my book. Why? 'cause he's a damn scooterist, that's why! Spoon, I'm sure things have improved for you in the woman department since your brief stay here in Austin. I wanted to let you know that you're always welcome back! (mostly because I won't have to worry about you stealin' my lady... Kosmo & Brady, you guys are NOT invited!)

Brand new (old stock) 1981 Honda MotoCompo on eBay
(Not a single buttock has not has been lain upon her pristine vinyl seat!)
By know you know I'm a fan of oddities... and Hondas... and rarities... So, this morning when I checked ebay and found not one, not two, BUT THREE 1981 Honda MotoCompos MINT IN BOX, I was completely floored. Three? I even have intermittent thoughts of selling Leia (my Vespa T5) to get in on this! Crazy, right?
The next question is what will they go for? Right now they are listed at $2,000 each + $300 shipping, and the reserve has not been met yet. If you win they will be crated from Japan to California where you will probably have to make additional shipping arrangements to get them to your neck of the woods.
The seller RMD Motors, is trusted (99.7% positive) with over 1,394 transactions. I'll keep an eye on these and see if I end up making the jump on one. I've also contacted rick to see if he has exported a Suzuki SW-1; the only motorcycle I'm interested in owning right now. I know, I know, you probably thought you'd never hear that I would own a motorcycle... but this is a special exception (well, that and the V-Rex). Oh, and before we go, here are the 3 MotoComos awaiting their ocean voyage to the USA.
***UPDATE***
Well, as of this moment, bidding will end in just under 4 hours. The price for one of them is currently $2650.00 and the reserve is STILL not met. That means, if you want one of these babies you can expect to pay at least $3000 (shipped)... and THAT'S assuming the reserve is set to $2700. Who knows? Could be more. Either way these items are reserved for the true collector. They've been out of my range a few hundred dollars ago.
***UPDATE***
DANG! The bidding went up to $3490 (+$300 shipping) and the reserve STILL wasn't met. Looks like these are too rich for ANYONE's blood. I'm sure even i***o, the highest bidder, had to be thinking "WTF?!". Oh well, there's still 3 up for sale if anyone's interested. (I just realized that ebay blocks the bidder's information now to protect them, so i***o is just an ebay assigned name.)

Honda will introduce a Silverwing 750 at the Tokyo Auto Show

(NO! No Forza Z ABS 250 for you! Oh, and no pictures of the SW750 yet either.)
According to a press release just caught by Dudel (our intrepid scooper) Honda will be featuring the following scooters at the 40th Annual Tokyo Motor Show (Oct 27th - Nov 11th):
TODAY 50cc
LEAD 100cc
FORZA Z ABS 250cc
and...
SILVERWING 750cc
BOOYA! 750 displaced cubes are expected from the latest Silverwing. Do you believe that?
Unfortunately we may not see any of these in the USA, except possibly the Silverwing. Definitely no Forza, Lead or Today.
Click on the title link to catch the rest of the show overview press release. I have a feeling they are still hiding something... or maybe that's more of a wish than a feeling.
A fresh load of Tokyo Hotness available for your viewing pleasure

Our good friend in the Land of the Rising Sun, Kuroneko (AKA Skorji), has graced us with a fresh batch of Japanese customs today. Lots of great ideas for Yamahas, Hondas, and more!
I love Kuroneko's work so much... I supported him by hooking him up with a Pro account at Flickr. I mean, where else am I gonna find great shots like THIS, THIS or THIS? Arigato Gozaimashita Kuronekosan! I especially like this one...
Recognize the Jacket Patch? Here's how Kuroneko describes this shot:
This is Shibuya Crossing, and the Starbucks etc used in that crap cliched (but well shot) film Lost in Translation. Credits to 'Skorj, from www.filmwasters.com, and the model goes by the name of Akai Kitsune. Arigato!

Scooter dashboard collection?

Some people collect paper clips, some people collect stamps. hey-gem collects photos of scooter dashboards in Taiwan. hey-gem is an animation student with an affinity for industrial design. She enjoys quite walks in the toy store and nights curled up on the couch with popcorn watching her violent film collection (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction).
Click on the title link to see all 125 shots. Quite an endeavor! Thanks for sharing hey-gem!

Gilera Fuoco 500 to arrive in the USA as the Piaggio MP3 500 (CONFIRMED)

(woohoo! I can't wait to do THIS)
This could be the biggest news to hit all year... Are you ready? (takes grain of salt) The grapevine known as the ModernVespa Forum (see title link) has word from "Lucky Bastard", that the attendees of the recent Piaggio dealer meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona were informed that the USA will be receiving the Gilera Fuoco 500 as the MP3-500 from Piaggio for 2008.This is HOT off the rumor mill STOP THE PRESS!
Here's what we've got confirmed so far... For 2008 Piaggio will bring us the MP3-400 (which resembles the current MP3-250) and the MP3-500, which is a rebadged Gilera Fuoco 500! The image above is actual-factual. This week, the Piaggio / Vespa shop owners are in Arizona getting the hottest scoop available. Thanks to Dudel for the "first blood" on this story. We hear that the Vespa S may be included in the 2008 line-up, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Thanks again to "Lucky Bastard" for sharing this image with the ModernVespa crew!
Stay tuned for MORE!
***UPDATE 9/18/07***
I'm starting to scrounge up some tidbits, this is what I'm hearing:
The Piaggio MP3-400 (In the current MP3 body style except with the extra power we've all been waiting for) will be arriving at dealerships as soon as January.
The Piaggio MP3-500 (A rebadged Gilera Fuoco 500) will arrive around March with an expected MSRP approaching the $10k mark. Well, what did you expect? Hotness has a price.
The elusive Vespa S (the cute one with the thin leg shields and rectangular headlight) is supposed to arrive before Q2, 2008 with a 150cc engine and an MSRP of about $4,000.
These bits are not from the "official" source, but I don't have reason to disbelieve what I'm hearing right now. So, we are awaiting "official" word, which should bubble up between now and Tuesday with the inclusion of some specs, photos and official MSRP numbers. Stay tuned!
***UPDATE 9/19/07***
The Honky-Tonk Dragon is droppin' THESE numbers for MSRP:
"Per a reliable source on Modern Vespa"
The 250 will be $7199 next year (They are $6999 right now).
The 400 will be $8699 and the 500 will be $8899.
And the Vespa S 150 will be $4099

124 MPH Scooter captures the eye of Gizmag
(video of the GP800 at EICMA shared by gguiotto. Thanks!)
The Gilera 840cc scooter (GP800) startled the crew over at Gizmag. It starts out like this:
An 840cc, 90-degree fuel injected V-twin, performance chassis, 200kmh top speed and braided brake lines… on a CVT, step-thru scooter? After sending heads spinning with its Nexus 500, a scooter that handles like a sportsbike in the twisties, Gilera have completely dumbfounded us with their GP 800 hyperscooter. Striking some sort of bizarre balance between a super-grunty commuter and a genuine sports-tourer, this bespectacled bad-boy is the new and undisputed king of the scooter segment.
Gilera have fired a definitive salvo in the maxi-scooter capacity war we wrote of last year with the release of their anticipated GP 800. Although it’s missing the electronic transmission we expected, the whopping 840cc v-twin engine remains, making it the biggest, baddest and fastest scooter on the market; a 16 year-old bully kicking over the third-graders’ sand castles.
Gilera are creating a whole new class with the GP 800 – let’s call it the hyperscooter class. It’s designed to maintain the practicality and ease of use of a step-thru city scooter, while giving the rider the genuine chance to take it touring or thrashing in the twisties. Looks-wise it's as though a Burgmann has mated with a Hayabusa. It's still definately a scooter though, which will help its popularity among non-bikers - even if this is offset by a very hefty 245kg dry weight.
They are awfully excited by this 75hp hyperscooter and they should be. It's the MOST POWERFUL SCOOTER IN THE UNIVERSE! Click on the title link to read the rest of their hot-and-bothered write up.

Engadget - New stereo bluetooth headset available!
While digging around DIGG, I DUG a cool upgrade for your helmet from our trusty sponsor Benchmark Helmets. Engadget give their take on this latest, greatest piece of high tech headgear and here's what they had to say:
We've certainly seen our fair share of nicely-equipped motorcycle helmets, but Benchmark Helmets is looking to spruce up your everyday noggin protector rather than forcing you to buy a whole new one. Marketed towards "scooter and motorcycle enthusiasts," the Camos lineup includes two new headsets that utilize Bluetooth 2.0 and support A2DP / handsfree profiles. Additionally, both tout waterproof housings and connectors, directional microphones with noise canceling technology, stereo speakers, and 10-hours of talk time (150-hours in standby). The BHS-500 is set to land for $149, while the $199 BHS-600 ups the ante by allowing users to pair up another BHS-600 for a "complete wireless intercom system."I think the most important thing here is the A2DP which means Hifi Stereo compatibility, so if your phone or MP3 player can pump out stereo BT sound, these babys can pump it into your ears. I'd love to give those puppies a whirl. The last BT headset I got from CardoSystems was great, but the mono FM only goes so far before frustration sets in.
Go here to buy them directly from Benchmark!

Way off topic: Music and movies

(nothing says "off topic" like a golfing moose)
Just because I figure SOMEONE will appreciate it, I wanted to list a couple of useful tools and one badass movie trailer for something to hit in May 2008. First, let's talk music.
If you are like me, you love music and are always hunting for something worthwhile to stick in your ears. Here are two tools that may help you discover bands that you might have never heard of... Music-Map and Liveplasma. For the first one, Music-Map, all you need to do is click on "Map" in the upper left hand corner and enter the name of someone you like currently and out pops a crazy flash map of artists who sound similar. Now you have some artists to search for at your favorite music spot to see if you dig their sound. Liveplasma is like Music-Map with the possibility of some different associations being made. I say use both tools to make sure you've properly narrowed down your next favorite band.
Finally, if you haven't eyeballed it yet, you have to watch the IRONMAN trailer. I have a feeling THIS will be one of the best comics turned movie and will hopefully break the "curse of the 'man' movie". There have been some REALLY crappy "MAN" movies like, Lawnmower man, Medicine Man, Superman (Returns), Spiderman (3) and Batman (with Penguin, Dr.Freeze, Riddler, etc). The only ones I can think of that were worth half a flip were Spiderman 1 and 2, Maybe Batman 1 and the new Batman 1, and Rainman. Ironman will totally rock!

Ultimate roadside readiness kit?

While visiting VespaMaintenance.com, I found Richard Hoar's pretty comprehensive checklist of tools he brings on the road with him. Outside of spare bulbs and electrical tape, he has most everything covered with maybe a little room to squeeze some other essentials in there. You may wanna bring some extra oil (gear oil, engine oil/2 stroke oil) lube for cables, brake fluid (if you've got disc brakes). As long as you've got space, why not cram a gas can in there.
This is a disposable folding cardboard gas can from itzagascan made right here in the good old US of A. Another great item, that will probably put a cramp in your storage space, is THIS little emergency pack from the other side of the globe... the Emergency Ramen kit.
Everything you need to feed a pack of 5 hungry scooterists on your way to the rally... so at least you've got lunch covered.
So, as long as we're on the topic... what else do you suggest one bring to boost their road readiness before a long haul? I'm trying to figure out the ultimate roadside readiness kit. It would ultimately fit in your scooter's built in storage (glove box, underseat, etc).

Micros make a small splash at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show
A cool little Gawker Media company called Jalopnik (which translates roughly into "car nerds"), dropped their coverage of the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. If you are a fan of scooters and microcars, you would have had very little to get excited about from a numbers standpoint. The closest thing to a scooter they had was a Skoda (not at all a scooter) and the Peugeot Flux (the spacey 2-seater seen below also not at all a scooter) then...
We move to the microcars, of which there were only 3 that I could find.
One is this, the Toyota IQ concept. Her style hasn't completely grown on me yet. Coming it at a mere 9.8 feet long, it's still a whole foot longer than the SMART which allows it to outdo the SMART in passenger space with what they call 3+1 seating (room for 3 adults and 1 child). The IQ also got a heavy-handed swat from the technology gods allowing for a lot of multi-function bits (like the dashboard) and ultra-compact items (like the heating & air system). Who knows for certain if we'll ever see these things on the road (rumors say Summer of 2008), but I just think it would be cool to hotrod one so I could tell people "I found a way to boost my IQ". (sorry, jokes a bit rusty tonight).
Anyway, on to the next Micro. This is the SMART Brabus Ultimate 112. I like how Jalopnik describes it:
Touted as a true city sports car by the Smarts, the diminutive urban block carver features a searing orange paint job and cabrio top that folds away in seconds. The rest of the roof stows away in a back drawer. The 110 horsepower turbo mill delivers max torque of 111 foot pounds of torque when kept in 2800 to 4200 rpm range by the Brabus sport steering wheel mounted paddle shifter. The spokesmodels had no comment on if a miniature screaming chicken decal would become available. It's hot, IMHO, even if it's 0-60mph in 9 seconds.
Last up with this naughty little microcar from VW...

This is the VW UP! concept. Doesn't it look mischievous here? Like it's about to burn down your house. I don't know that it really even qualifies as a micro, sliding in at just over 10 feet in length... it's still shorter than a Honda Fit (13 ft). Really, there wasn't a lot of small rides in the house. Yes I was surprised. From the photos I saw, it looked more like the Dubai show... Lots of big budget bling mobiles on the floor. Oh well, there ya have it. Let's hope we see something better from the other shows in the coming weeks.

Scooters and heels (for educational purposes only)
Scoot_Kitty77, friend and frequent reader of TheScoop has submitted a little article I'd like to post because I've got friends at Modern Buddy too. It goes like this [oh, and I'm gonna start interjecting within square brackets now since some people like to use parenthesis when they write]:
My buddies over at Modern Buddy have had a longstanding thread [title link] about scooters and heels.[...] now of course I don't condone the use of unsafe footwear (heels, flip-flops, crocs, Uggs, etc) [nor does Steve] but as long as they were talking about it, I thought I'd give a few [dangerous] examples that I've run across. [I'm sure you meant to put "dangerous" in there, right?]Thanks for that report Scoot_Kitty77! I'm sure you are doing a great service by advising our readers on improper safety gear. We hope you'll return with more great skin-saving tips!
[The following images illustrate unsafe footwear while on or near a scooter:]
Here is acutedangerous example of strappy white stilettos on a Honda in Japan. [Thanks to To Tokyo_Scooter_Stuff for the example.]
And here is an Italian pair to die for [no, really] that you shouldn't wear on your Vespa, unless you are just posing on your small frame, like so. [Thanks for digging in the archives athan.didas!]
If you want to get a good tan without all that yucky sand on your tush, you could just lean back on your ET. [no riding! Only leaning back.]
It is tre fashionable to pose in front of your scooter when an ocean of butterflies floats by. You wouldn't want to ride through them or else you'd get icky butterfly guts all over your pretty legshields. [Remember to put on clothes before remounting to continue your ride. Dr.Umbo took this shot to educate YOU.]
The only time you can actually ride in heels safely is if you are a cute little cartoon, like this sweetheart. [agreed. Thank you Plexipixel for the schweet illustration!]CuteImproper headwear, matching handbag and chunkies with a pretty lipstick smile all say "I'm riding dangerously and I'm cute." [Don't let this happen to you. Image brought to you by MiMundo.org]
The queen of all the land sits perched on her big wheel. This is VERYsexydangerous! Especially on cobble stone. All the boys will notice [how unsafe] you [are]. [Yes, dangerous indeed. Shai* took this marvelous photo example of what not to wear while scootering.]
Oh, and if you HAVE to wear heels while scooting, check out ICON's Bombshell boots. Functional and fashionable!

Vespa inspired toilet?

Over at DesignSpotter (title link) I found this design that looked awfully familiar, especially with that shadow model sitting there. It was only on closer reading did I realize this wasn't some Vespa simulator or new-fangled school desk, but something called a Universal Toilet. The designer in South Korea was aiming to create a "can" that was equally functional for handicapped as well as non. I could see that as a modern scooter design though. Kinda in an iRobot sorta way.

Slightly off topic: Zeel Bobster for sale

They may not do scooters, but I'm sure there are some scooterists out there who can appreciate what Zeel Design is doing with motorcycles... especially with THIS oddity, the Zeel Bobster. I mean, if you're gonna make a tricycle, it might as well look like a damn TRICYCLE! The Kneeslider (title link) made a little announcement that the Zeel team is selling this Biker Build-off winner to the highest bidder. Bidding ends in 3 days and starts at a cool $50,000 (thats $US not $CAN). Don't worry, you've got a good chance of winning considering no one has placed a bid as of this morning. I love this trike!

Bat Maxam!

Remember the "Ghost Morph" from last November? This is a photo shared by Tokyo_Scooter_Stuff titled "Maxam - Gero Gero version". I'm a newb when it comes to cool Japanese phrases, so I don't know what Gero Gero means. Best I could find was that it meant "Ribbit Ribbit" or "Disgusting". Personally, I think it's kinda fly... though I wonder if a speedbump would just take you right out, though.

Hrm... the SUBmicro car? Because your Burgman is TOO DAMN BIG!

Our loyal and esteemed, on the scene journalist, Lawrence, was digging around the DarkRoastedBlend site and found this article called "Worlds Smallest Vehicles", and VERY few (if any) are smaller than the PEEL 50! You could click on the title link to see more super-micros, but this PEEL is TEENY! (insert "they'd have to peel you off the pavement" joke here). I mean REALLY! A single passenger car? You think THAT'S funny, check out the procession below!
It's a hoot. And to think these were commercially available! Well, to the tune of 47 between the years 1963 and 64. They made a 2 seater also from '64 to '66. More facts over at the PeelCars site.

The perfect all-weather commuter?

You may remember Pedro from Portugal. He's healing up nicely at home now after his leg was run over by a big rig. Well, part of the deal with that accident was that he promised his family he'd retire his scooter for good. I respect that decision, but that doesn't mean he doesn't miss riding. As a matter of fact, he recently sent me this email:
Hi Steve!Ingenious! Well Pedro, you are not alone with that thought. Cyberscooter.it just did a story on the "Fiat" Hang 400. I say "Fiat", because it's simply labeled a Fiat. It doesn't belong to Fiat, it belongs to Massimo Barcella who provided the concept and John Keogh & Ian Pegram who provided the design. Together with their concept and their blog they are hoping to drum up some interest and perhaps do just what you've suggested Pedro. Get the players together to engineer this thing.
How was your week in Florida? I'm sending you a photo of a Piaggio MP3 here in Lisbon that I saw today, which lead me to have a three-wheeled epiphany: what would you get if you mixed a Piaggio MP3 with a BMW C1, plus a little from a Smart car? Imagine a BMW C1 with two wheels up front. Now, because you don't need to get your feet on the ground on when you stop, you can add doors! You would have a vehicle that was weatherproof, almost as safe as a car, but still narrow enough to split lanes! How do I get the people from all three companies speaking to each other? :-) Since I had the accident and promised to never ride again on two wheels I've been thinking of loop holes :-P
Pedro
Your dream of riding again may someday come true Pedro! I'll keep my finger on the pulse here and keep ya posted.

The offical 2008 Honda Lineup
We're still processing it all here at TheScooterScoop headquarters. So far looks like the surprises we were hoping to see may have turned out to be surprises we DIDN'T wanna see. What we mean to say is, we're not seeing the Honda Elite... We're not seeing the Big Ruckus... We're not seeing the Reflex... We're not seeing the Honda Helix! Oh the humanity! I'm hoping and praying right now that this is just a preliminary list of 2008 releases, though I'm not holding my breath for the announcement of the DN-01, the GRF-1, the E4-01 or this thing. At this point I'm afraid to hold my breath for the SH 300i the return of the Monkey or the import of the Super Cub. If we confirm the loss of the Elite, Big Ruck, Reflex and Helix... we'll just pass out.
Let's take a peek at a couple of the new announcements:
The 2008 Honda Metropolitan in Monza Red, also available in Ocean and Gothic seen below.
More updates to come with info on the other scooters that we know will be around for 2008, the Honda Silver Wing and the Ruckus.
*I feel sorta sick*
***UPDATE***
Here's what I'm banking on right now... Honda is holding their cards for 2008 until either EICMA in November or the Tokyo Motor Show in October. This official announcement may only be revealing the updates to their existing models. Let's dry our eyes and wait 'till then.

Steve Williams basks in the glorious fog

(Steve W. seen here on a foggy road in the sticks posing with his lovely GTS)
Steve Williams, scooter photojournalist and keeper of the award winning Scooter in the Sticks blog, found himself a jackpot while riding recently; an atmospheric wonderland of pea-soup fog. Not so great for riding, but friggin' awesome for shooting photos.
If you click on the title link you will be directed to a discovery-by-discovery journal of this photographically fantastic adventure. Spoiler Alert: There's a red newt crossing the road.

ScootinOldSkool takes the SMART for a spin... comes back wanting more

(Orin patiently awaits his turn on the SMARTY-go-round)
Digging myself from a pile-o-crap that has landed on me recently, I've finally had a chance to visit my fellow blogmates to see what's new in the scootering world. Orin, the lucky SOB, had a chance to put the screws to a new SMART. I appreciate his brutal honesty... well, it's only brutal if you're a SMART fanboy / fangirl. In summary he says that the SMART is a car for modern microcar fans. It's tiny and cute and small and cuddly; that sums up its Pluses.
I'm expecting to give her a go next month. We'll see if TheScoop is in concurrence with TheOldSkool.
We are also awaiting word on the 2008 Toyota AYGO and expecting to see her on the red carpet at the 2008 Tokyo Auto Show later this year along with her little sister the Endo.
Hrm... I wonder if Chevy will actually do anything with their BEAT concept. Let's get some 45mpg+ microcars on the roads Chevy! A little birdie says nothing expected until 2010 or 2011.
Oh yeah! And what's up with that iCar Mitsubishi?

I'm so blue
After :30, I gave up. Came home... he's still talking. Gave him the hand-off to the wife, wrote this post and now I'm going to retire in his bed. It's the bunk right under my little girl's bed. At least SHE sleeps good. G'nite.
OH! And prepare to be shocked and awed tomorrow night. Honda will make their official product announcements for 2008. OMG! I can hardly wait... now, I'll never get to sleep. Tune in just after 10pm CST to get the scoop.
***CLARIFICATION***
I wrote this on Tuesday morning, so by "tomorrow night" I mean Wednesday night... Which also happens to be my birthday. w00t!
